Lady you should know about: Mia Zapata

Mia Zapata was the lead singer of The Gits, a band that infused elements of blues and soul into their garage-punk sound. The Gits were one of the mainstay acts of the early '90s Seattle scene. But unfortunately, despite being an extremely talented songwriter and vocalist (and an enigmatic frontwoman), Zapata is more widely recognized for her death than for her life. After leaving a bar and stopping at a friend's house in the early hours of July 7, 1993, she was raped, beaten and murdered on her way home.

Zapata's tragic and shocking death did have a positive result. It inspired fellow musicians and friends to start Home Alive, a nonprofit that offers anti-violence education and outreach as well as self-defense classes on a sliding scale. The organization released a compilation in 1996 that included Fastbacks, Nirvana, 7 Year Bitch, Lydia Lunch, Joan Jett and more. Jett also performed and recorded with the surviving members of The Gits as Evil Stig, covering several Gits songs.

Be sure to tune in this Tuesday as we'll not only be joined by Erica of Sharp Teeth, but we'll be talking about Take Back the Night, which Radio K and Girl Germs are sponsoring (the rally and march will be happening Friday, April 23 and Girl Germs will be handing out Radio K merch from 6 to 7pm). Come take back the night with us, and of course BE SAFE.

Take Back the Night...with Girl Germs!

Join Girl Germs and Radio K Friday, April 23 as we sponsor Take Back the Night in Minneapolis' Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Organized by Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG), TBNT is a march and rally that empowers victims of domestic and sexual assault by literally taking to the streets and demanding the power to walk safely at night.
This year's event will take place at the plaza in front of Hanson Hall (at the corner of 19th Ave South and Riverside in Minneapolis). The event starts at 6pm and includes free food, entertainment from musicians and spoken word artists, personal testimony from survivors, a march in the Cedar-Riverside area, and a candlelight vigil. For more info, visit MPIRG's web site.

And while you're at TBTN, look for our table and come say hi! Girl Germs will be there taking back the night with you and handing out Radio K swag!

Tuesday, April 20: Erica of Sharp Teeth!

We're very excited to welcome Erica of local band Sharp Teeth as our guest on Girl Germs this Tuesday. Erica is not only a talented guitarist and vocalist, but she teaches little kids how to play guitar - awwww!
Make sure to listen Tuesday from 9-11pm (100.7/104.5/106.5 FM and radiok.org) as Erica spins some of her favorite lady artists and talks about her musical endeavors. And check out this awesome in-studio session Sharp Teeth did at Radio K last year.

Also this spring:
May 4 - in-studio performance from Cadette (featuring Stephanie of the Deaf and Laura of Baby Guts/Kitten Forever)
May 11 - Laura of Red Pens
...and many more exciting guests in the works. Check back for more details.

Record Store Day

Tomorrow is Record Store Day, so don't forget to head out and support your fave local independent record store(s)! We are super excited to hunt down some new records to play for you on Girl Germs. I (Dana) have my eye on the new Scout Niblett and perhaps some vintage Linda Ronstadt. Several artists will be releasing exclusive, limited edition pressings specially for RSD (find a list here, as well as a list of participating stores). Those Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, CocoRosie, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Black Moth Super Rainbow records all look worth spending a paycheck on.

THANK YOU, from Girl Germs and Radio K!

The numbers have finally been tallied, and during the very first fund-drive edition of Girl Germs this Tuesday, we officially made $710. Nine of you became members in two hours - very impressive, especially for our first fund drive.
We know you've heard this a billion times, but your contribution is - quite literally - what allows Radio K to thrive. We couldn't host instudios, sponsor the tons of events you go to around town (not to mention give you tickets to them!), support independent local and national musicians, or be the valuable part of your life that we are without members like you.

So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Enjoy your thank-you gifts (email membership [at] radiok [dot] org if you have any questions about picking up or having your gift shipped), and rest assured that every dollar you gave will be put to good use.

April's Honorary Lady: Antony Hegarty

We introduced a new feature on the show tonight - the "honorary lady." The honorary lady is an artist who may not be female, but who in some way embodies the innovative spirit of Girl Germs - by challenging perceptions of gender, standing up for GLBT rights, contributing to the DIY scene, blazing trails for female artists, supporting feminist ideals...you get the picture.

Our first honorary lady is Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons. Antony is a transgender artist who, through his unique, haunting vocal styling and painfully beautiful compositions, is constantly making innovative contributions to the music world. this Mercury Prize-winning artist is also a role model, raising awareness of the trans community and reaffirming the fact that you can be talented and successful no matter what your gender is. He's collaborated with many other great artists, such as Sharon Jones, Bjork, Lou Reed, Hercules and Love Affair and Marianne Faithfull.

Read more about Antony Hegarty here.

Spring fund drive, Girl Germs style

What do you get when you combine Radio K's spring fund drive with Girl Germs? For one, you get the satisfaction of supporting the Twin Cities' greatest radio station. But you also get...
FABULOUS PRIZES.
(Take a deep breath)

This is the scene at Girl Germs World Headquarters. We're furiously putting together mixtapes, CD packs and buttons! (Disclaimer: '90s boombox is not a fund drive gift! We're keepin' it!)

To thank you for becoming a Radio K member during the fund drive episode of Girl Germs (this Tuesday, April 13 from 9-11pm), Dana and Anna have put together some pretty awesome swag (if we do say so ourselves...). Your Girl Germs fund drive gift is IN ADDITION to the already-awesome Radio K fund drive gifts (see those here).

$60 or $5/MONTH: 4-pack of limited-edition Girl Germs 1-inch buttons + your choice of a CD pack (see titles here).
$120 or $10/MONTH: 4-pack of limited-edition Girl Germs 1-inch buttons + a mixtape handmade by Anna and Dana, including cover art. What's on this mixtape, you ask? It's a surprise! Telling you would take all the fun out of that amazing first mixtape listen. But rest assured, it will rock your world.
$240 or $20/MONTH:
4-pack of limited-edition Girl Germs 1-inch buttons + Dana and Anna will DJ at your  next party/event. Just give us an idea of some genres or artists you like, and we'll put together and play a two-hour DJ gig that will amaze and delight the guests at your birthday celebration, dinner soiree, dance party, barbecue, bat/bar mitzvah or casual get-together! (Subject to scheduling availability, of course). We will provide all equipment and music.
$480 or $40/MONTH:
ALL OF THE ABOVE! buttons, CD pack, mixtape AND DJ gig. It's all yours

Fund Drive CD Packs

So many to choose from! When you call 612-626-ROCK, let your helpful phone room volunteer know which one you'd like. Or if you contribute online at radiok.org, just write a note in your donation form!
